From Awareness to Action: Orunsii Welcare’s Mission for Mental Health

The Orunsii Welcare Foundation has organized several impactful events in the past, all of which were aimed at raising awareness, reducing stigma, and promoting mental health education within our communities. These events included workshops that addressed the harmful effects of bullying, as well as campaigns geared towards educating students and teachers about mental health. Our initiatives have had a lasting impact on those we have reached, leading to a shift in attitudes towards mental health, reduced stigma, and increased empowerment of individuals to seek support and resources when needed. Each event has played a crucial role in creating a more supportive and inclusive environment for mental well-being, ultimately contributing to positive change within our communities.

UN Sessions:

The 68th annual Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68)  

The Orunsii Welcare Foundation held an impactful event alongside the United Nations 68th session Commission on Status of Women (CSW) on the 14th of March, 2024. Hosted in New York at the prestigious 777 United Nations Plaza, the presentation aimed at addressing critical issues faced by vulnerable women in accessing mental health care, with a focus on the Nigerian and African American communities. Esteemed speakers at the event included Dr. Ubong Jackson Udoyen from Yale School of Medicine and Dr. Tina Onikoyi, who is renowned for her in-depth research and contributions to mental health care strategies. The program, coordinated by Dr. Olumide Sojirin, emphasized the foundation’s commitment to improving mental health care accessibility and the development of practical strategies for vulnerable populations.

MHADE In Lagos

The “MHADE IN LAGOS” event took place in April 2021 with the theme “NO HEALTH WITHOUT MENTAL HEALTH” at Alimosho LGA. This event, driven by Mental Health Awareness, Destigmatization, and Enlightenment (MHADE), aimed to shine a lignt on mental health issues. Through engaging discussions, informative sessions, and community involvement, the event highlighted the importance of mental well-being in overall health. Attendees had the opportunity to join the conversation and contribute to building a healthier, more supportive community.

World Mental Health Day

On October 8, 2021, Orunsii WelCare Foundation organized a significant event at Ireti Senior Secondary School in Ikoyi, Lagos, focusing on promoting mental health awareness among students and teachers. With a commitment to fostering a supportive environment for mental well-being, the event aimed to equip attendees with essential knowledge and resources. Additionally, as part of the foundation’s dedication to education, learning aids and equipment were generously donated to the school, enhancing the educational experience for students. Furthermore, the creation of the “ORUNSII TEENS CLUB” marked an exciting initiative to provide ongoing support and resources for young individuals navigating mental health challenges. With 120 students and 18 teachers in attendance, the event facilitated meaningful conversations and initiatives to promote mental health awareness and support within the school community.

Anti-bullying Through Football

In response to the escalating reports of bullying incidents in schools, Orunsii WelCare Foundation organized a significant event in May 2022 to address this pressing issue. Themed “SAY NO TO BULLYING,” the event aimed to raise awareness and promote a culture of zero tolerance towards bullying among adolescents. Held at Campos Stadium on Lagos Island, the event featured a diverse range of activities, including lectures, musical performances, sports competitions, drama presentations, and role-playing exercises. With the participation of 1,200 students from 38 secondary schools across the region, the event provided a platform for open dialogue, education, and empowerment to combat bullying behaviors and foster a safer and more inclusive school environment.

Antibullying Campaign 2.0:

Promoting Anti-bullying Through Art

In September 2022, Orunsii WelCare Foundation hosted the much-anticipated “ANTIBULLYING CAMPAIGN 2.0: PROMOTING ANTIBULLYING THROUGH ART” event at Ireti Senior Secondary School in Ikoyi, Lagos. Centered around the theme of “Promoting Antibullying Through Art,” this innovative campaign aimed to harness the power of creativity to combat bullying behaviors. The event saw enthusiastic participation from 60 students belonging to the ORUNSII TEENS Club, who showcased their artistic talents through various mediums such as paintings, drawings, and sculptures. Through these expressive artworks, the participants conveyed powerful messages of empathy, kindness, and solidarity in the fight against bullying. As a result of this impactful campaign, there was a notable increase in awareness among students and a surge in membership for the ORUNSII TEENS Club, demonstrating the effectiveness of using art as a tool for social change.
